Description
The Montgomery County Planning Department is seeking eight (8) highly motivated Undergraduate and Graduate Summer Interns who are passionate about shaping communities and building a better future.
Joining our paid internship program means you will have the opportunity to dive into exciting plans and projects, apply smart growth strategies to cultivate dynamic urban centers, and encourage great community design. Our internships offer hands-on experience for students pursuing careers in:
- Urban Planning, Architecture, Urban Design
- Environmental Studies, Sustainability
- Transportation, Geography
- Public Policy
- Finance, Business, Accounting
- Human Resources, Industrial-Organizational Psychology
- Journalism, Communications
Dates & Additional Information:
Internships will run from June 1 to July 31, 2026.
The projected pay for this position is from $20.50 per hour to $23.50 per hour depending on level and qualifications.
Interns may work between 20 and 40 hours per week.
Application Instructions:
Students must attach a copy of a college transcript to the application. An unofficial transcript is acceptable.
Students must attach a personal statement to the application, indicating goals and aspirations that may be enhanced by participating in the program. Statements must be at least one (1) page long.

Transportation Planning Intern
Basic understanding of pedestrian, bicycle, and transit best practices
Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro
Planning Intern
Experience with community engagement and public speaking
Experience with GIS
Environmental Planning Intern
Strong research skills
Ability to assist with data collection
Planning Research and GIS Intern
Strong data cleaning and analysis skills
Experience with GIS
Housing Intern
Strong research and analytical skills
Experience with GIS
Urban Design Intern
Experience with 3D modeling software
Skills in photo-editing software
Human Resources Training Intern
Ability to manage multiple projects
Ability to analyze data
Communications Intern
Written communication and copyediting skills
Familiarity with Adobe and Microsoft programs
Minimum Qualifications
Student Eligibility:
Students must currently be enrolled in urban planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, history, anthropology, public policy, environmental studies, sustainability, business, finance, accounting, communications, or journalism at a college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level and must have a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
Intern I:
Currently enrolled in college pursuing either an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree or attending a technical school pursuing a professional license in a field of study related to the discipline of the area to which assigned.
Intern II:
Student who has received a Bachelor's Degree and accepted or enrolled in a Master's Degree Program in a field of study related to the discipline of the area to which assigned.
